What does it mean to confess that Jesus is Lord?

There is a verse of scripture which says that "If you confess with your mouth 'Jesus is Lord' and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead you will be saved". In modern times most English speaking people use the word 'Lord' differently to how the word from which it is translated was used by scripture writers, and it varies between countries and cultures. So to say it honestly is impacted by this. In the UK it derives common meaning from peerage and feudal systems which have given it bad connotations. What I believe is meant by the verses of scripture calling Jesus 'Lord' is the meaning of one who is both carer and has authority over all. So belief and confession that Jesus is in authority over all creation and over His followers and cares by providing spiritually and justly as God has given Him full authority, authority He had by the nature of what He is from the beginning of Time, and confessing this belief is what saves us, along with believing God has raised Him from the dead to be alive forever. But we might not find the word 'Lord' fits with this because of the different meaning that word honestly has for us.
