The Narrow Gate

The Catholic catechism quotes Jesus “Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few." That is item 1036 of the catechism. It implies the Christian faith is the narrow gate. Now juxtapose this with catechism item 261: “The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian faith and of Christian life. God alone can make it known to us by revealing himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” Actually the teachings of Jesus are the narrow gate. Being persuaded of this, through God’s grace, is the faith. Jesus never said “God reveals Himself as Father and Son and Holy Spirit”. Jesus said the Father alone is the One True God. So the catechism is badly mistaken. Not necessarily in other matters, but mistaken about God revealing the Trinity. God reveals that He is the Father who alone says “I am God”. But don’t only point a foreboding finger at Catholics. It is exactly the same with Protestants in the Thirty-Nine Articles, Westminster Confession, Alpha Courses, etcetera, etcetera. So vital to stick to Jesus’ teachings as the narrow gateway to life and Heavenly immortality.
