Jesus Christ is divine as the Son of the Father set apart to be judge over all, but he is distinct from God the Father. Therefore, it was Jesus, the Son, who laid down his life as an act of ultimate obedience and love towards God the Father, fulfilling His divine mission. God, in His essence, did not die, but rather, it was Jesus, the human being endowed with a divine mission, the human only begotten Son of the non-human Father, who sacrificed his life.
