People’s lives are saved for eternity so that they may know Jesus Christ, because eternal life is found in knowing God and His Son. While this is the ultimate purpose, many are first drawn to Jesus through an awareness of their sin—recognizing that their sin places their eternal future in danger. They come to Him as the one who can deal with their sin, setting them free in order to save them. Yet this need for Jesus does not end once they are freed from past sins; it continues throughout their lives. Believers continually depend on Him to keep them free, even as they grow in their knowledge of Him and of God. This knowledge of Jesus is something that can be experienced with deep joy, and it naturally overflows in a desire to share Him with others. Still, this joyful sharing takes place in the ongoing reality that each of us remains dependent on Jesus to free us from sin, as long as we continue to follow Him as His disciples.
