The apostles understood that tricksters are enemies of righteousness. Trickery undermines proper action by offering seemingly alternative solutions to problems that should be addressed through right action or belief. There are always those who, through deception, lead potentially righteous individuals away from the path of righteousness. Cult leaders are potentially an example of this. How can we discern whether a leader is a deceitful trickster intent on sabotaging the ways of light and distorting the purity of the Word of God? We might recognize it, or we might not. The apostles were mindful of this when selecting a replacement for Judas Iscariot. They asked God, who knows the heart of everyone.
