Psalm 2 portrays a key understanding of the Messiah, the Anointed One. He is characterised not as the God-man, but rather as God’s anointed man. Prophetic scriptures such as Enoch, and Daniel, and Revelation all portray the Anointed One as the human ‘Son of Man’ chosen by God to appear before Him on behalf of humans. Why did he come and how does it affect you and me? He came as light sent by God. He is to be believed for this reason, and his teachings followed. God sees doing so as righteous, and credits it as such, but it also leads us to the cleansing we need of our moral state and behaviour, to put us in a better position when the Son of Man comes again to judge. We can be part of a New Covenant with God made by the crucifixion death and the resurrection of this Anointed One, in which we can become united at a spiritual level with him. That creates a community of all those so united with him. But we do need to keep holding to and following his teachings, with faith in him, to remain part of this.
