It is fair to say that, for the earliest Christians, Jesus’ virgin birth functioned primarily as a messianic sign (proof of his identity as the Christ) rather than as a statement about his metaphysical “divine essence.” The overtly ontological, “divine-nature” interpretations developed more fully later, especially in the 2nd–4th centuries.
