You know what it’s like when people always paint themselves into the scripture passages as the saint, the believer, the “us” good guy, the sheep but never the goat? It’s like personal hygiene: It would be like not washing for days but when you are in a crowded elevator and someone has nice aftershave or perfume on you tell yourself “I smell nice today”. Then when you get a whiff of your own bad smell you tell yourself “one of the people in this elevator hasn’t washed for days”. Your self-delusions mean you never get the lesson you need that would make you wash. That is what it is like when people always put themselves in the scripture passages as the good guy. Then it is like other people have to share an elevator with them, and Ugh!
