Honouring the covenant

It makes sense that marriage is not usually in secret. It is something that must be honoured, not only by the couple, but by all. Everyone should recognise it and honour it when a couple are married. A ring is worn to help those who see it to recognise that someone is married. They need to be allowed by those around them to behave as is appropriate for marriage.

Like the covenant of marriage, God has a covenant with the whole world, which He established after the Flood to promise never again to flood the whole world. He marked the promise with a kind of ring. The rainbow. It is rather like a marriage ring. The world shows its ring often when it rains but the sunshine is still bright. I saw a marvellous rainbow today, when the rain had subsided and the sun came out. It was a triple rainbow, and all of it was visible and bright. A sign of hope, and of God’s faithfulness in His covenant with all humans and animals on earth. We too should all honour that covenant, like we honour it when we see that someone is married. Another covenant is made with everyone too, which is the covenant formed when the Christ, Jesus, gave his body and blood as sacrifice on a cross for sins of all. It is especially for believers, but for everyone too. Again everyone should honour it.
